For a feature that so many people had been interested in for so long it's a sad and uncommon failure for what is otherwise one of my very favorite pieces of technology. Hold either one down for a couple of seconds, and it’ll map to whatever voice command you entered last through the Roku remote’s separate microphone button. The volume change now takes 1-2 seconds to occur instead of being instant. Hold either one down for a couple of seconds, and it’ll map to whatever voice command you entered last through the Roku remote’s separate microphone button. Use Device Settings Press the Home button on your Roku remote. There's literally no instance in which it would be faster or more convenient to use these new buttons. The remote also has a pair of programmable buttons. It takes me at most 2 seconds to go to the home screen, navigate to Plex or Amazon and select them. A user presumably is going to use these custom buttons for their favorite apps and so they're likely in the top row of the home screen. It might have been easier than programming the Roku itself to associate an app but it makes the custom buttons pointless in my opinion. But as pointed out, it sounds like you have an older device/remote without that option. You have to hit the mic button and ask to open a 'Channel', then press and hold the number of the two buttons you want to program that Channel to. The buttons labeled 1 and 2 can save any voice command that Roku supports just long-press either button after the voice command, and it’ll be set as that button’s function. Wait 10 seconds, reconnect the box, and wait for the Home page to load. The newest Roku devices have voice remote and two programmable buttons labeled '1' and '2'. A Walmart exclusive, the Roku Ultra LT, goes for 79. slimmer player, and its remote includes a mute button. Essentially it's identical behavior to when you use voice commands and so presumably they "achieved" custom buttons by doing something like storing the last voice clip on the remote and then just sending that to the Roku whenever you press that button. Disconnect your Roku box from its power supply. The enhanced remote also now includes two customizable buttons (labeled 1 and 2) which can be trained to perform just about any command. The only time it doesn't is if I'm on the home screen in which case it goes straight to Plex. I checked lots of different combinations and this message comes up whenever I'm in an app and press one of the custom buttons.
